Love in the kingdom of oil pdf
Ketika perempuan itu muncul kembali, pembaca dihadapkan pada kaburnya jarak para laki-laki dalam hidupnya. Ia berganti-ganti suami akhirnya kembali ke suami pertama yang ternyata telah memiliki istri baru. Di novel Love in the Kingdom of Oil inilah Nawal menyajikan surealisme dengan memvisualkan hakikat berpikir. After all, in the Kingdom of Oil where His Majesty reigns supreme, no woman has ever dared disobey the command of men.
When the woman finally reappears, there is a blurring between the men in her life, as she leaves one to join another. She is trapped in a man-made web, unable to escape from a male figure who continually fills urns that she must carry.
Surreal and satirical, Love in the Kingdom of Oil is a startling reflection on the limits of female freedom in a patriarchal society. Nawal El Saadawi — was an internationally renowned feminist writer and activist from Egypt. A lot of the feminist activists that I follow on social media were recommending this book so I bought it without reading I was sadly dissapointed by this read. A lot of the feminist activists that I follow on social media were recommending this book so I bought it without reading any reviews.
I am not sure if it was the translation that was just off as I read it in english and could clearly see the parts where the translation from arabic was simply not working. It could also be that this surreal genre of literature does not float my boat but my goodness was it difficult to get through this tiny book.
I felt like I was being drowned by the Oil she keeps referring to and I simply could not follow or be bothered to remember which man she was talking about. It felt like everytime I'd open the book I'd be rereading the same thing.
Was there even a plot? Was there any character development? What was even happening? All I gathered is that she loved her chisel. I am sorry this review is really harh, I would love to support female Arab writers especially feminists but this book just didn't do it for me. I must say, I was very excited to start this book. I had never read anything by Nawal before and was intrigued to read a feminist book written by an Arab author. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm disappeared after reading about 20 pages - it was way too surrealistic, nothing really made sense in the story, and it felt like I was reading a collection of random ramblings.
Too abstract and surrealistic for me to enjoy. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Be the first to start one ». Readers also enjoyed. About Nawal El Saadawi. Nawal El Saadawi.
