Ibms program
Researchers in structural biology and biophysics study the structures, dynamics, architecture, and physical behavior of biological molecules and biomolecular assemblies using complementary physical, biochemical, and computational techniques. Researchers in genomics and proteomics study the organization and products of genomes, especially the functional proteins, aiming to understand biological pathways, networks, and their relationships with the information content of the cell.
Researchers in cancer biology perform basic and translational research relating to the detection, prevention, onset, and treatment of cancer. Expertise includes oncogenes and growth factors, cell adhesion, metastasis, tumor microenvironment, and tumor immunology. Researchers in immunology and infectious disease use cross-disciplinary approaches to investigate the mechanisms pathogen virulence, immunological responses required for control, and the interactions between host and pathogen.
Researchers in chemical biology and molecular pharmacology study drug action and drug design and develop synthetic compounds to probe and control biological process. Researchers in computational biology and bioinformatics study large datasets such as sequences, microarrays, and metabolic networks, and use computational algorithms to model and understand complex biological systems.
Researchers in cellular and molecular biology aim to understand the functions and mechanisms of biological processes at molecular and cellular level and investigate how they contribute to cell and organism development.
It is a two-way process in which the mentor and mentee work together to set and achieve predetermined goals and objectives. Mentoring is a way of enabling the mentee to gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to perform at a higher level, and of giving them access to impartial, non-judgmental guidance and support. Everyone has something to give, and everyone has something to learn. We hope our program will enable IBMS members to reach their full potential.
Mentees will need to register for the site, have their registration confirmed by IBMS staff, and then set up their profile. Course Requirements. Although there are no specific course requirements for admission into the IBMS Graduate Program, past experience has shown that undergraduates entering this interdisciplinary program benefit from having completed upper-division courses in cell or molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics.
In addition, successful applicants often have evidence of previous research experience. Personal Statement. The applicant must submit two essays that describes professional goals and reasons for wishing to pursue graduate education, and in particular in the IBMS Graduate Program.
Letters of Recommendation. Three letters of recommendation are required. Letters should be from individuals who have information regarding academic, research, and personal accomplishments of the applicant that are predictive of success in graduate school.
Letter writers should be chosen so as to enhance, not duplicate, information found in academic transcripts. Scores for either test must have been taken within two years of applying for admission. Top domestic candidates are invited for on-campus interviews. International applicants who have completed or will complete their degree prior to matriculation at an accredited U.
Background Checks. UT Health San Antonio requires that applicants to all graduate programs clear a security and criminal background check prior to matriculation. Department of Education designated Hispanic-Serving Institution and the IBMS Graduate Program has a long history of recruiting and retaining and graduating students from groups underrepresented in the biomedical sciences.
It is also the responsibility of each IBMS student to complete all administrative and academic milestones of the IBMS Graduate Program and adhere to the required timeline for completing those milestones including the submission of all paperwork required to verify appropriate academic progress in the IBMS Graduate Program. Full-time student status requires enrollment for a minimum of Prior to graduation, every Ph.
Note : Depending on the extent of classroom contact necessary to adequately prepare students for their research activities, or intrinsic differences in the time required to complete different research projects, actual total semester credit hours in the Plans of Study provided by the 7 disciplines may vary, although total semester credit hours typically will exceed the 72 semester credit hours minimum.
By the end of the Fall semester of Year 1, each student is expected to identify a permanent dissertation research mentor supervising professor , and in consultation with the research mentor will select a particular IBMS discipline and its Plan of Study.
